SPAN 315: Introduction to Translation: Spanish/ English
Course Description Students perform introductory translation assignments from Spanish to English and vice versa. They develop an understanding of translation theory through reading and class discussion and come to understand communicative translation and compare it to a direct, word-for-word approach. Problematic grammatical, discursive, and pragmatic issues are analyzed and the grammar of Spanish is reviewed in detail. (Prereq: SPAN 202)
Course Reflective Narrative This course made me realize that translating is not as easy as many people thinks. Through this course I fulfilled major learning outcomes 1 and 2. This course allowed me to develop my language proficiency in both languages, English and Spanish. By taking this course I was able to gain a deeper knowledge of the Spanish language. There are linguistics variations in the hispanic world and it is important to learn about all of them. Knowing the variations helps to know how to translate based on the audience that will be getting the message. I was able to learn how people from different countries call certain things. In this course I learned to translate commercials, a book for kids and Spanish sayings. This class gave me language knowledge and developed my language proficiency. The projects for this class made me learn more about the spanish language and its translation. I learned that it is important to know who the audience is, where are they from and many more things in order to make a good translation. After taking this class I felt that my translating skills improved, and this is useful for me because my parents don’t speak English and I translate for them all the time. Furthermore this is useful for my career and future job because having knowledge about the different spanish variations helps me to better understand readings and people. In conclusion taking this class increases my competency as a student and as a future employee. In the United States and mainly in our state California it is very important to be bilingual, I chose the right major, and the right classes to be prepared for the future.
